2009 Australian Junior Championships

Congratulations to our NQ Vikings U14, U16 & U18 teams who successfully contested the Nationals Junior Championships in Perth 3/6/09 to 8/6/09.

This year our NQ Vikings U14 team was represented by Justin Allen, Phil Angel (co captain, Nicky Barkle, Liam Breen, Guy Brooks (co captain), Tranter Keyes, Chris Lamont, Zac Smedley, and Andrew Watkins. Coach was John McConkey and manager was Colleen Watkins. The NQ Vikings U16 team was represented by Brock Allen, Brent Croker (captain), Michael Donnelly (Qld shadow), Nathan Donaldson, Jayden Engert (Qld shadow), Pat Easling (Qld shadow), Daniel Henshall Andrew McAlister, Wes Smith (vice captain) and Andrew Tarnawski. Coach was Matt Sorohan, assistant coach John Reid and Manager was Jason Henshall. We had two parent helpers Tony Tarnawski and Mark Donaldson.

All teams were congratulated by opposition coaches for their excellent sportsmanship, good behaviour and “never say die” Viking attitude.

The Qld U18 side that beat WA in the final 132 to 2 contained a total of 6 local Townsville players and all the boys contributed strongly to the success of the team. The 6 boys were Andre Boyle – captain, Rhys Dearness- VC, Matt Fry, Nathan Senet, Rhys Pallanza and Braden Fisher.

The Qld U18 Ladies side that made the grand final got narrowly beaten by NSW. Emily Johns and Kristina Roughsedge represented Wildcatz Indoor Sports in this side.

We had many successes with the following players making the Australian team in various age groups: Kyle Wills Nathan Senent David Spargo Rhys Pallanza Rhys Dearness Andrew Boyle and Matt Fry. Phil Angel is the first NQ Viking to make the Australian U14 Allstars team.
A great effort from all players who are home grown!! Anyone who has any photos of the tournament I encourage to send through to the centre so  we can get them up onto the website also.

“The week was real learning curve for us all. We started on fire, then we lost one our top players with a serious injury and the team almost fell apart. To their credit, they picked themselves up, dusted themselves off and went on to make their first ever semi final, knocking over traditional big guns QLD & NSW along the way. Phil Angel was a standout and thoroughly deserved his Australian selection, while Guy Brooks was one of the tournaments best bowlers”     -John McConkey (Under 14 coach)
